This piece will be equally useful both for experienced Android users of KeepSolid VPN Unlimited and for newcomers. For the latter, allow us to explain some VPN software basics. Namely, the concept of a VPN protocol – a dedicated technology that allows VPN developers to secure the internet connection between a user and a website.

VPN protocols pros and cons

VPN protocols come in many versions. Some, like PPTP, are downright outdated. While they still see some use, this is rather due to them being habitual to the system administrator than for any worthy reason. Other protocols are more up-to-date, but specialize in different aspects of VPN technology.

Advantages like high speed and Mobility support would be more than enough for some users to buy an IKEv2-based VPN. But with KeepSolid VPN Unlimited, you don’t even have to! Click To Tweet

Up until now, the default protocol of KeepSolid VPN Unlimited on Android was OpenVPN. It offers the best overall protection to Android users and is great if you need raw security. Alas, OpenVPN has some downsides that make it suboptimal for mobile users. It is bulky, lacks performance speed, and is prone to occasional disconnections and other technical problems.

IKEv2, on the other hand, is free of such drawbacks. Even though it offers slightly less effective Android protection than OpenVPN, it’s still more than sufficient for most users. And the benefits easily compensate for the lack of security:

  • significantly higher speed

  • firewall traversal
  • enhanced Mobility support
  • simplified message exchange
  • reliable when switching internet connections
  • supports VoIP telephony

How to setup IKEv2

All these advantages would be more than enough for some users to buy an IKEv2-based VPN. But you know what’s the best part? You don’t even have to pay! From this day on, all VPN Unlimited users can choose IKEv2 protocol from the list in their Android VPN Unlimited clients for free. This is how you do it:

  1. Launch KeepSolid VPN Unlimited

Thanks for reaching out! Yes, IKEv2 protocol is considered to be quite secure, stable, and fast. Download KeepSolid VPN Unlimited app, connect to a VPN server, run Kodi, and enjoy the unmatched protection the IKEv2 protocol gives you!

  3. Just updated using the PlayStore to latest version of VPNUnlimited and now I see the IKEv2 protocol added. Just tried several times at different times of the day and it’s definitely improved my Internet Download speed as per SpeedTest. In fact I see the sustained speed now that I’m paying my Internet Provider for.
    Thanks for the insight!

  4. Once I have followed the above do I choose optimal? How do I know which is the best server to use?

    • Hi John,

It depends on your purpose. In case you want to protect your traffic, do select the Optimal server option. The choice of the best server for your connection will be made automatically.

If you also want to unblock certain content, you’ll need a server of the country that allows access to the required websites.
